Description

Zinc sulphate is a zinc supplement used to treat and prevent zinc deficiency. It is commonly prescribed during and after episodes of diarrhoea, especially in children, as zinc plays a key role in immune function and enzyme activity.


Used For / Indications

  • Treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency

  • Supportive treatment in diarrhoea (especially in children)

  • Enhances immune function and gastrointestinal recovery


How It Works

Zinc sulphate monohydrate provides zinc, an essential trace element required for multiple enzyme functions in the body. It aids in immune response, mucosal integrity, and recovery during illness, especially diarrhoeal diseases.


Dosage

As per physician’s advice or WHO guidelines:

  • Children (6 months to 5 years): 20 mg once daily for 10–14 days

  • Infants (2–6 months): 10 mg once daily for 10–14 days

Note: Dosage may vary depending on formulation and age.


Side Effects

  • At recommended dosage, no significant side effects observed

  • Mild gastrointestinal discomfort (rare)


Drug Interactions

  • May reduce absorption of:

    • Tetracyclines

    • Quinolones

    • Iron, calcium, copper, phosphorus supplements

    • Penicillamine

    • Trientine
      Note: Administer at least 3 hours apart from these medications


When Not to Use / Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to zinc sulphate or formulation ingredients

  • Copper deficiency
