Used For

How it works

Verapamil belongs to the calcium-channel blocker class.

  • Relaxes blood vessels, lowering resistance and easing the workload of the heart.

  • Increases oxygen and blood supply to the heart muscle.

  • Slows electrical conduction through the heart to help control heart rate.


Usage and Safety

Dosage:
As prescribed by a physician (contains Verapamil Hydrochloride).


Side Effects

  • Common: Constipation, dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue, edema, flushing.

  • Cardiac: Bradycardia, AV block, angina pectoris, atrioventricular dissociation, palpitations, syncope, CHF (congestive heart failure), myocardial infarction (rare).

  • Other: Dyspnea, rash, chest pain, claudication, purpura (vasculitis), diarrhea, dry mouth, gastrointestinal upset, gingival hyperplasia, blurred vision, tinnitus, increased liver enzymes.

Indication

  • Treatment of hypertension

  • May also be used (with physician guidance) in management of angina and certain cardiac arrhythmias


When not to Use (Contraindications)

Do not use in patients with:

  1. Severe left ventricular dysfunction

  2. Hypotension (SBP < 90 mmHg) or cardiogenic shock

  3. Sick sinus syndrome (unless patient has a functioning pacemaker)


Precautions

  • Verapamil is extensively metabolized in the liver → use cautiously in patients with impaired hepatic function.


Warnings

  1. May cause a drop in blood pressure below normal → dizziness or symptomatic hypotension may occur.

  2. Has a negative inotropic effect (weakening of heart contraction), but usually balanced by reduced vascular resistance.

  3. Elevated liver enzymes (transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin) have been reported in some patients.
