Detail Description
Brimo-T Eye Drops 5 mL Specification
Requires Prescription (YES/NO)
Yes
Generics
Brimonidine Tartrate, Timolol
Used For
Glaucoma
How it works
Brimo-T contains two active components:
-
Brimonidine tartrate – reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) via a dual mechanism: decreasing aqueous humor production and increasing uveoscleral outflow.
-
Timolol maleate – a non-selective β₁/β₂-adrenergic receptor blocker that lowers IOP by decreasing aqueous humor production. It lacks significant intrinsic sympathomimetic, myocardial depressant, or local anesthetic activity.
Elevated IOP is a key risk factor for glaucomatous optic nerve damage and visual field loss; reducing IOP lowers this risk.
Usage and Safety
Dosage
Brimonidine Tartrate + Timolol — dosage as prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
Side Effects
Foreign body sensation, eye pain, photophobia, conjunctival hemorrhage, dry eye, ocular irritation, increased IOP, corneal endothelial cell loss, blurred vision, iritis, headache.
Drug Interactions
-
Catecholamine-depleting drugs (e.g., reserpine)
-
Antihypertensives and/or cardiac glycosides
-
Alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, anesthetics
-
CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., quinidine, SSRIs)
-
Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
Indication
Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
When not to Use
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to brimonidine, timolol, or any excipient in the formulation.
Precautions
-
Beta-blockade may worsen cardiac failure in patients with diminished myocardial contractility.
-
Even without prior heart failure, prolonged myocardial depression from beta-blockers can cause heart failure.
-
Discontinue at first sign of cardiac failure.
Warnings
-
Avoid use in patients with COPD (mild/moderate), bronchospastic disease, or history of bronchospastic disease.
-
Beta-blockers may increase the severity of anaphylactic reactions and reduce the effectiveness of epinephrine in patients with severe allergies.
-
Beta-blockers can mask signs of acute hypoglycemia or hyperthyroidism; use caution in diabetics and patients at risk of thyrotoxicosis. Avoid abrupt withdrawal.
