Generics: Azithromycin

Used For:

  • Bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms

How it Works:
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting translocation of peptides and thereby suppressing bacterial protein synthesis. This results in a bacteriostatic effect.


Usage & Safety

Dosage:
As prescribed by a doctor. (Contains Azithromycin)

Side Effects:

  • Sudden wheezing, breathing difficulty, facial/lip/eyelid swelling, rash or itching

  • Severe/prolonged diarrhoea (possibly with blood/mucus)

  • Severe skin rash, redness, flaking, blistering (including Stevens–Johnson syndrome)

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Low blood pressure

  • Serious skin reactions affecting skin, mouth, eyes, genitals

Drug Interactions:

  • Ergot or ergotamine

  • Warfarin

  • Ciclosporin

  • Antacids

  • Digoxin

  • Colchicine (for gout/familial Mediterranean fever)

  • Terfenadine

Indication:
Treatment of bacterial and certain other microbial infections.

When Not to Use:

  • Allergy to azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, or any macrolide antibiotic

  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the medicine


Precautions & Warnings

Precaution:
Report any abnormal heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, or muscle weakness to your doctor immediately.

Warnings:

  1. If diarrhoea or loose stools occur, contact your doctor. Do not self-treat without medical advice.

  2. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

  3. Contains lactose—consult doctor if lactose intolerant.
