Cetirizine Syrup/Suspension Specification

Description:
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergic symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. It has minimal sedative effects compared to older antihistamines.

Uses

  • Relief from seasonal allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny/itchy nose, itchy/watery eyes)

  • Relief from skin reactions due to insect bites/stings

Dosage

  • Adults & children ≥12 years: 10 mg (10 mL) once daily

  • Children 6–12 years: 5 mg (5 mL) once daily

  • Children 2–5 years: 2.5 mg (2.5 mL) once daily

  • Children <2 years: As prescribed by physician

  • Dose may be adjusted for severe allergies under medical supervision


Overdose

Symptoms: Drowsiness, tachycardia, headache, dry mouth.
Action: Seek immediate medical help; do not induce vomiting unless instructed. Activated charcoal may be used under medical supervision.


Missed Dose

Take as soon as remembered; skip if near the time for the next dose. Do not double up.


How to Use

Take once daily, with or without food. Shake bottle well. Use the provided measuring device. Take at the same time daily.


When Not to Use

  • Allergy to Cetirizine or formulation ingredients

  • History of hypersensitivity to other antihistamines

  • Severe renal impairment (unless prescribed)

  • History of alcohol or drug abuse (risk of increased drowsiness)


Side Effects

  • Common: Drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue

  • Less common: Stomach pain, sore throat, rash, itching


Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in kidney problems; dosage adjustment may be required

  • Avoid alcohol/CNS depressants (increased sedation)

  • Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if drowsy

  • Not for children under 2 years unless prescribed

  • Pregnant/breastfeeding women should consult a doctor


Drug Interactions

  • Alcohol & CNS depressants: Increased sedation

  • Other antihistamines: Risk of excessive drowsiness

  • Theophylline: May alter clearance of cetirizine

  • Caution with drugs affecting liver/kidney function


Food Interactions

  • No significant interactions with food

  • Avoid alcohol (increased drowsiness)


Storage

Store at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep tightly closed and out of children’s reach. Do not store in bathroom. Dispose properly when expired.
