Generic Name

  • Ticagrelor


Used For

  • Blood clots

  • Cardiovascular death reduction

  • Myocardial infarction (MI)

  • Stroke prevention in patients with ACS or prior MI

  • Stent thrombosis prevention post-ACS treatment


How it Works

Ticagrelor reversibly interacts with the platelet P2Y12 ADP receptor, preventing signal transduction and platelet activation. Its active metabolite has a similar potency.


Dosage

  • Ticagrelor (standard dosage as prescribed by a physician)


Side Effects

  • Very Common: Bleeding, hyperuricemia, dyspnea

  • Common: Dizziness, syncope, headache, gout, vertigo, hypotension, respiratory bleeding

  • Uncommon: Tumor bleeding, hypersensitivity (including angioedema), intracranial hemorrhage, eye/ear hemorrhage, confusion


Drug Interactions

Avoid with:

  • Strong CYP3A inhibitors: ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir, etc.

  • Strong CYP3A inducers: rifampin, phenytoin, phenobarbital

  • Aspirin doses >100 mg

  • Simvastatin/Lovastatin >40 mg

  • Monitor Digoxin levels when co-administered


Contraindications

  • History of intracranial hemorrhage

  • Active bleeding (e.g., peptic ulcer)

  • Hypersensitivity to ticagrelor or ingredients

  • Severe hepatic impairment


Precautions

  • Increases risk of bleeding

  • Avoid abrupt discontinuation unless essential

  • Use cautiously in patients with liver disease


Warnings

  1. Dyspnea is a known side effect; usually mild and transient.

  2. Discontinuation risk: Sudden stopping may increase the chance of MI, stroke, or death.

  3. Hepatic impairment: Use with caution; limited data available.
