Dosage Form: Oral Suspension (Syrup) – 90 mL


Used For / Indications

Used for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections including:

  • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)

  • Ear, nose, and throat infections

  • Skin, soft tissue, bone, and joint infections

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Post-operative wound infections and septicemia 


Mechanism of Action

Ampicillin and cloxacillin both inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis. Ampicillin offers broad-spectrum coverage, while cloxacillin adds resistance against β‑lactamase producing strains, enhancing antibacterial activity 


Dosage

  • Adults & Elderly: 1–2 g orally every 6 hours, as directed 

  • Children (2–12 years): Half adult dose (5–10 mL) every 6 hours 

  • Neonates & Infants: Neonatal drops formulation; syrup typically not used in <2 years 


How to Use

  • Shake well before use

  • Administer using a calibrated measuring device

  • Take preferably on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after food)

  • Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early 


Missed Dose / Overdose

  • Missed Dose: Administer as soon as remembered; if near next dose, skip it. Do not double dose.

  • Overdose: Seek medical assessment immediately; watch for gastrointestinal symptoms or allergic reactions.


Contraindications / When Not to Use

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins

  • History of allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis or Stevens–Johnson syndrome

  • Should not be used in infectious mononucleosis

  • Use cautiously in severe hepatic/renal impairment in infants or neonates 


Side Effects

  • Allergic reactions: rash, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis

  • Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis

  • Bleeding tendencies or hematologic changes (rare) 


Precautions & Warnings

  • Evaluate allergy history before use

  • Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions

  • Use under medical supervision in infants with immune or metabolic conditions

  • Avoid misuse to reduce antibiotic resistance risk 


Drug Interactions

  • Probenecid: increases penicillin levels

  • May interact with oral contraceptives, warfarin, tetracyclines, methotrexate, and others—monitor as needed 


Storage & Disposal

  • Store below 25 °C in a cool, dark, dry place

  • Use the suspension within 7 days of reconstitution (if required)

  • Discard any unused medication after the recommended period

  • Keep out of reach of children
