Used For / Indications:

Used to treat a range of bacterial infections in neonates and young infants, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Septicemia in neonates
    Especially effective against penicillin‑resistant staphylococci and streptococci


Mechanism of Action:

Ampicillin and Cloxacillin inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis. Ampicillin covers broad‑spectrum bacteria, while cloxacillin adds activity against β‑lactamase-producing strains, delivering enhanced antibacterial coverage.


Dosage:

  • Neonates to 2 years: 0.6 mL (90 mg) every 4 hours via calibrated dropper

  • Dosage may be adjusted based on weight and severity of infection

  • Pediatric suspensions: Half adult dose every 6 hours for ages 2–12

  • Adults (capsules/suspension): 1–2 g every 6 hours orally, as directed


How to Use:

  • Shake bottle well before use

  • Use calibrated dropper for accurate dosing

  • Administer before feeding

  • Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early

  • Consult pediatrician for precise dosage


Missed Dose / Overdose:

  • Missed Dose: Give dose as soon as remembered; if near next dose, skip and continue. Do not double dose.

  • Overdose: Seek medical assessment immediately if overdose is suspected. Monitor for gastrointestinal symptoms or allergic reactions.


Contraindications / When Not to Use:

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins

  • Infectious mononucleosis

  • History of allergic reaction to β‑lactam antibiotics

  • Avoid use in neonates with severe hepatic/renal impairment without medical supervision


Side Effects:

  • Rare allergic reactions (rash, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis)

  • Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting)
