How It Works

Both ampicillin and cloxacillin are bactericidal antibiotics that act by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall in dividing organisms, leading to bacterial death.


Ampiclox Neonatal Usage and Safety

Dosage
  • Contains Ampicillin and Cloxacillin. Dosage should be prescribed by a physician based on the patient's condition and age.

Side Effects

Patients may experience the following side effects:

  • Hematological: Hemolytic anemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis.
  • Allergic Reactions: Anaphylaxis, skin rash, urticaria, pruritus, bullous reactions (including erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), exfoliative dermatitis, and purpura.
  • Neurological: Myoclonus, convulsions.
  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, pseudomembranous colitis.
  • Hepatic: Hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice.

Drug Interactions

This medicine may interact with:

  • Probenecid.
  • Oral contraceptives.
  • Sulphonamides and acetylsalicylic acid.
  • Bacteriostatic drugs.
  • Allopurinol.

Indications

This medication is indicated for treating infections caused by mixed Gram-positive (excluding methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA] and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus [MRCoNS]) and Gram-negative bacteria.


When Not to Use

This medication is contraindicated:

  • In patients with a history of hypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins) or excipients.
  • For ocular administration.

Ampiclox Neonatal Precautions

  • Avoid usage if infectious mononucleosis or acute/chronic leukemia of lymphoid origin is suspected, as the occurrence of a skin rash is associated with these conditions after administration of ampicillin.

Ampiclox Neonatal Warnings

  1. Penicillin Hypersensitivity: Caution is advised when administering neonatal oral drops to babies whose mothers are hypersensitive to penicillin.
  2. Previous Hypersensitivity: Before initiating therapy, inquire about any history of hypersensitivity to beta-lactams.
  3. Allergic Reactions: If an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue the medication and institute an appropriate alternative therapy. Treat adverse reactions symptomatically.
