Overview

Advacort Ointment is a topical corticosteroid used for treating various forms of eczema. It reduces inflammation and allergic reactions in the skin, providing relief from redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort.


Uses

  • Atopic dermatitis (endogenous eczema, neurodermatitis).
  • Eczema in children.
  • Contact eczema.
  • Degenerative, dyshidrotic, or vulgar eczema.

How It Works

  • Reduces inflammation and allergic reactions in the skin.
  • Decreases redness (erythema), fluid build-up (edema), and fluid oozing.
  • Relieves itchiness, burning sensations, and pain.

Dosage

Side Effects

Common:

  • Burning sensation and itching at the application site.

Uncommon:

  • Dryness, redness (erythema), blisters.
  • Hair follicle inflammation (folliculitis).

Rare:

  • Skin infection, swelling, or irritation at the application site.

Not Known:

  • Increased hair growth.
  • Stretch marks.
  • Specific inflammation around the upper lip and chin (perioral dermatitis).
  • Skin discoloration.
  • Blurred vision.

Drug Interactions

  • No known interactions with other medicines.
  • Inform your doctor if you are currently using, have recently used, or plan to use other medications.

When Not to Use

Do not use if:

  • You are allergic to methylprednisolone aceponate or any other ingredients in the ointment.
  • The eczema or rash has become infected.
  • The affected skin shows:
    • Red or rosy inflammation (rosacea).
    • Ulcers.
    • Inflamed sebaceous glands (acne vulgaris).
    • Infected skin folds, groin, or underarms (intertrigo acne).
    • Thinning skin conditions (atrophic skin diseases).
    • Weeping skin.

Precautions

  • Anti-inflammatory corticosteroids like methylprednisolone aceponate have strong effects.
  • Avoid using on large areas of the body or for prolonged periods to minimize side effects.

Warnings

1. Infections:

  • If bacterial or fungal infections are present, additional therapy is required.
  • Contact your doctor if the infection spreads or worsens.
